What is it?
A summer tradition, the 5 Star Grand Prix is STARDOM’s most prestigious tournament, their equivalent to NJPW’s G1 Climax. For 2023 the number of entrants has been reduced to twenty, meaning there are less chances for error in a tighter field.
Two blocks of ten wrestlers compete in a round robin format, pitting the best of the company against each other across two gruelling months, from opening night on July 23 at Ota Ward Gymnasium until September 30 at the Yokohama Budokan. Competitors score two points for a win and one for a draw, with the wrestler who earns the most points in each block facing off in the final.
Writing your name into STARDOM history by winning the tournament grants you two things. Firstly the robe and crown that the victor adorns at the end, and secondly: a shot at the championship of your choosing, which in recent years has taken place on the last show of the year, Dream Queendom. While the ultimate goal is to hold championship gold, being one of the rare few to win the 5 Star GP is an honour on par with being a top champion.
Who has won the tournament in the past?
It is a prestigious list of names that have been crowned the 5 Star Champion since the tournament’s inception in 2012. Even if you’ve never seen STARDOM before, you’ve probably heard of some of these names: Io Shirai, Kairi Hojo (aka Kairi Sane), Toni Storm, Hana Kimura and Mayu Iwatani. Last year’s winner was Giulia, who after dropping her opening weekend matches went on a tear to climb her way back up the ranks. With a final night test of Suzu Suzuki and then Tam Nakano in the final, the Donna Del Mondo leader was truly tested to the very end. Anyone who is still standing come September 30 will have truly proven themselves as one of the best in the company.
How can I watch?
By far the easiest way to do so is to sign up to Stardom World, which costs 920 yen a month (that’s less than $7USD). Shows are uploaded to the site in the days following a show, depending on where the event was held and how busy the live schedule is. In ring promos are also subtitled in English, so don’t worry if you don’t speak Japanese. There’s also a back catalogue from previous years to sink your teeth into if you’re hungry for more.
One thing to keep in mind: payment for a new cycle will be taken from the 1st of the month no matter when you initially signed up, so for maximum value sign up at the start of the month.
Several nights will also fall under the PPV distinction. These will be available to watch live through PIA for about 4400 yen (or approximately $32 USD). Because of PPV rights these shows have a predictable upload time to the World streaming service of 4-5 days after the event. Specific 5 Star events that fall under this category are the opening and final nights. There will also be PPVs on during the tournament’s run that have a couple of tournament matches, or are completely separate from the tournament.
There is also a 30 minute weekly TV show in Japan called We Are Stardom, that is uploaded on STARDOM’s YouTube. These shows will likely feature some of the biggest and best matches from the tournament and it’s free to watch. This is a good way to get your feet wet without diving right in, though there will be a couple of month delay between a match happening and its appearance on the TV show.
It is important to note that if you want to follow the tournament without spoilers, it is best to avoid the official Twitter pages as results are posted as they happen.
For even more coverage of the tournament, the Ocean Cyclone Show team also ran a livestream previewing the 5 Star Grand Prix, which can be viewed on the Wrestle Inn Youtube channel.
Red Stars Block:

Tam Nakano
- Representing: Cosmic Angels (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2022 – 5 Star GP Finals Appearance (8-4)
- 2023 Singles Record: 5-3
STARDOM has been walking the Tam Road in 2023. She closed out the biggest show in the company’s history standing tall as the World of Stardom Champion, and then went on to become just the second person to hold both the Red and White Belts at the same time. All this while rebuilding her Cosmic Angels with the additions of Saori Anou and Yuna Mizumori. That double championship reign might have been short lived, losing the Wonder of Stardom Title to MIRAI earlier this month, but Tam still has that rare honour and the top championship to her name.
There will be painful memories in her mind of the 2022 5 Star Final, as she fell agonisingly short of another prestigious moment. Losing to Giulia of all people stung deep, and while she gained revenge by winning the World of Stardom Title she now holds from Giulia, Tam will want to rewrite that wrong. This year might be tougher than ever though, as everyone in the Red Block will be targeting her specifically. Beat the champ in the 5 Star, and you have a case for a title shot.
Match to watch: Vs Mayu Iwatani, August 15. Tam Nakano has achieved just about everything she could hope to achieve in wrestling, including holding both the Red and White Belts at the same time. Only one other has managed this feat: Mayu. Defeating The Icon one on one is something Tam has never been able to do, and it’s perhaps the one final goal that alludes her. Doing so could also give her a second chance at the IWGP Women’s Championship.

Mayu Iwatani
- Representing: STARS (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2018 – 5 Star GP Winner (4-2-1)
- 2023 Singles Record: 1-0-1
STARDOM has changed a lot over the years, but the one constant has been the smiling face of Mayu Iwatani, who clawed herself up from the weakest debutante to The Icon. Mayu has been in the 5 Star GP since 2014, and while recent years has seen her constantly flirting with a Finals berth, she hasn’t been able to replicate her 2018 success.
As much as she’ll be hunting to become the first two time winner of the tournament, she’ll also be the hunted. With the IWGP Women’s Championship around her waist, everyone in the Red Block will be looking for a chance to stamp their name in the minds of the bookers by toppling her.
Match to watch: Vs Hazuki, July 23. Inter-faction matches are always a highlight of the 5 Star Grand Prix, and a showdown between the top two members of STARS – with a history spanning back to 2015 – is sure to be a show stealer. This will be fact paced and hard hitting, and will undoubtedly highlight the best of both women.

Saya Kamitani
- Representing: Queen’s Quest
- Best Performance: 2022 – 14 points (6-4-2)
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-1-1
It’s been an up and down year for the Golden Phoenix. Saya entered 2023 as the record breaking Wonder of Stardom Champion, but after dropping the title to Mina Shirakawa life has been difficult as she and long term tag partner Utami Hayashishita came close to separating. AphroditE and Queen’s Quest is now back on track, and not a moment too soon with the 5 Star GP about to start.
Saya has yet to win the 5 Star, but she’s no stranger to tournament victories. Her 2021 Cinderella Tournament win set the stage for what would eventually become her incredible Wonder of Stardom reign. Having proven herself as one of the companies top stars, she’ll be looking to do what only Mayu Iwatani, Toni Storm and Giulia have done before her – win both the Cinderella and the 5 Star GP
Match to watch: Vs Hazuki, September 3. Their Wonder of Stardom Title match earlier this year was one of the bet matches STARDOM have had this year, with Hazuki having the pace to work with Saya’s athleticism while forcing her to up the ante when it came to physicality. Expect a similar kind of match as the tournament steers into its final month.

Syuri
- Representing: God’s Eye (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2021 – 5 Star GP winner (5-2-2)
- 2023 Singles Record: 8-1
It’s been a quiet year for Syuri after she lost the World of Stardom Championship on the final show of 2022. Outside of a big victory over Chihiro Hashimoto, it feels like Syuri has been using the year to recover from a strenuous couple of years at the top – biding her time and energy for when she could remind everyone why she was considered the best wrestler in the world while she was champion.
A rested and ready Syuri is a terrifying prospect for the rest of the competition. She was nigh unbeatable before, but now she can enter without the strain of carrying the company. Her 2021 5 Star run remains one of the all time great tournament performances, the question is whether she can repeat that in a stacked field.
Match to watch: Vs Suzu Suzuki, July 23. With the Generational Struggle story ongoing within STARDOM, any match between the two sides in this tournament is sure to have a bit of extra spice behind it. Not that either competitor will need an added reason. This first time matchup is sure to be a highlight of a stacked opening night as two of the more violent wrestlers in the company go head to head.

Suzu Suzuki
- Representing: Unafilliated
- Best performance: 2022 – 15 points (7-4-1)
- 2023 Singles Record: 1-5-2 (1-1-2 in women’s only matches)
The fifteen minute time limit was perhaps the only thing standing between Suzu Suzuki and a 5 Star GP Finals berth in her first appearance. She couldn’t beat Giulia in time, and so she had to watch from the sidelines as Giulia not only made it to the Finals, but won the tournament and then the World of Stardom Championship.
A true wrestling prodigy, Suzu Suzuki will turn 21 during the tournament, but it already feels like a matter of when and not if she rises to the top. She left deathmatch behind earlier this year to focus on STARDOM, which can only mean great things are to come. Considering she’s both healthier and more focused this year, the potential for her to blitz the competition is frighteningly real.
Match to watch: Vs Mayu Iwatani, August 8. Suzu Suzuki is someone who walks into a room and instantly identifies who to beat to prove herself the biggest badass in said room. If you walk into STARDOM – The Icon is your target. She tried and failed in last year’s tournament, but she’s another year older and wiser.

Starlight Kid
- Representing: Oedo Tai
- Best Performance: 2022 – 14 points (7-5)
- 2023 Singles Record: 2-3-1
It’s been a rather quiet 2023 for Starlight Kid by her lofty standards. After winning the Goddess and Artist of Stardom Championships last year, she’s mostly been a side character of late. That’s not in Kid’s nature, and there’s no better time to change your direction in STARDOM than through a strong 5 Star GP run.
The Red Stars Block should suit her, as there’s a myriad of wrestlers willing to try and match her fast paced offense, but few can outwrestle Kid in a High Speed match. She also doesn’t have to worry about Giulia trying to unmask her mid match this year.
Match to watch: Vs Mayu Iwatani, September 30. For the third straight year, the master and the apprentice face off on the final night of the 5 Star. Starlight Kid has made it clear how important it is for her to finally beat her former mentor, but she’s yet to be able to do so. Can it happen when the stakes are at their highest?

Natsupoi
- Representing: Cosmic Angels
- Best Performance: 2022 – 12 points (6-6)
- 2023 Singles Record: 2-3-1
Consistently one of STARDOM’s more entertaining performers, Natsupoi has had a productive year both in and outside the ring. As one half of meltear she’s released an EP with Tam Nakano, wrestled in a company first Indian Strap match, and put on a MOTY contender with Mina Shirakawa over the Wonder of Stardom Championship. She feels more important than ever since joining Cosmic Angels, but so far she has been unable to crack that next level.
It’s a tough hill to climb for a natural underdog performer with the level of competition so consistently high this year, but it feels as though her time in the sunlight as a top champion is getting ever closer. Whether it is through this tournament or not though is the real question.
Match to watch: Vs Tam Nakano, September 30. Heated rivals to tag champions and a musical act – the meltear story is seeped in Tam Lore and emotions, and expect a heavy dose of both when they face off for the first time since teaming up. It was only a year ago they were slamming each other’s face into a cage.

Hazuki
- Representing: STARS
- Best performance: 2022 – 14 points (7-5)
- 2023 Singles Record: 1-1-1
The STARS second in command has proven herself a reliably dangerous entrant in the 5 Star GP, always finishing within 2 points of the eventual block winner. Her high octane and aggressive style is a crowd pleaser, and now she’s back in the company and away from Oedo Tai it feels as though she knows how best to regulate that energy.
One of several wrestlers who feel on the precipice of bursting through to that next level, Hazuki was running away with the tournament. Seven straight wins put her firmly in front before she choked and was forced to end up on the outside looking in. Whether she has moved on from that missed oppourtunity may be the deciding factor on if she advances or not this year.
Match to watch: vs Syuri, August 15. Hazuki is at her absolute best when she has an opponent she doesn’t have to hold back or slow down against. That’s Syuri. Expect both wrestlers to be feeling this first time ever match for several days afterwards

Natsuko Tora
- Representing: Oedo Tai (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2020 – 6 points (3-4)
- 2023 Singles Record: 2-1
It’s been three years since Natsuko Tora took part in the 5 Star GP. A major injury suffered right before the 2021 tournament meant she was a late scratch, and she didn’t return to the ring until after the following year’s tournament. Hopefully a few years away from the tournament will help her move past some disappointing performances, as Tora has struggled to impact the scoresheets, with even her strongest year being mired in disqualifications.
There will be a lot of pressure on the Oedo Tai leader, who snapped after losing the big 12 person cage match with Queen’s Quest at the end of June. If she can channel her anger and aggression, she could prove to be a dangerous matchup for anyone in Red Block, but if she loses control we might see her throw potential victory away in the search for pure mayhem and destruction. This might be the most important tournament of Tora’s career.
Match to watch: Vs Saya Kamitani, July 30. Losing the war with Queen’s Quest has clearly shaken Tora, who has been on a warpath since. At the forefront of that loss was Saya Kamitani, who had been the key to the destruction of Queen’s Quest. Her actions at the top of the cage decided the war, so expect Natsuko Tora to enact revenge against the former White Belt Champion.

Ami Sourei
- Representing: God’s Eye
- Best Performance: 2022 – 11 points (5-6-1)
- 2023 Singles Record: 4-3-1
It’s been a busy second year in the company for Ami Sourei, who spent time holding both the Goddesses of Stardom Tag Belts and the Future of Stardom Title. With an extra year of success and growth, Ami should present an interesting challenge for the rest of the block as its resident hoss.
Ami ended up in the bottom half of her block last year, but put forth a respectable debut effort including a couple of high profile scalps over Hazuki, Momo Watanabe and New Era tag partner MIRAI. It’s unlikely Ami makes it all the way, but she’s capable of a couple of big surprise victories again to shake up the block and hint at what the future might hold.
Match to watch: Vs Syuri, September 30. Nobody will know Ami better than her faction leader, and this is going to force her to think outside the box if she hopes to finish off her tournament with a win.
BLUE BLOCK

Giulia
- Representing: Donna Del Mondo (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2022 – 5 Star GP Winner (7-3-2)
- 2023 Singles Record: 4-2-1
Nobody has ever won two 5 Star GP tournaments. Giulia’s not only looking to do that but go back to back. She stumbled out of the gates with two losses last year, but was able to claw herself back into the picture by the time the two months had come and gone. With less competitors and room for error, a similarly bad start might spell disaster this time around.
That being said, Giulia isn’t someone to get caught in her own head. Expect her confidence levels to be as high as ever, especially with the newly acquired NJPW STRONG Women’s Championship around her waist. Her World of Stardom Title reign had plenty of life still in it when she lost to Tam at All Star Grand Queendom, and she would love nothing more than to wrench that title out of her biggest rival’s hands once again. Going back to back in the 5 Star puts her in the best situation to do so.
Match to watch: Vs Utami Hayashishita, September 30. The first time Giulia stepped inside a STARDOM ring, Utami was there in the ring. Yet somehow the two have never squared off one on one. Until now. Anticipation for their first match has been high for years – and a win or loss could decide who advances to the final later that night.

Utami Hayashishita
- Representing: Queen’s Quest (Leader)
- Best Performance: 2020 – 5 Star GP Winner (4-1-2)
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-0-1
What a difference a few weeks makes! It wasn’t long ago that people were seriously questioning if she could lead Queen’s Quest. Then she put on a career defining performance inside a steel cage to solidify her faction, and then crossed the ocean to prepare for the 5 Star with a mini U.S tour. Momentum is on her side, and now the Red Queen is a heavy favourite to be standing tall after two months.
There is an argument to be made that there isn’t a better 5 Star Grand Prix performer than Utami Hayashishita. She’s won once, made the Finals another time, and come within 2 points another two times (with one of her tournament runs ending early due to injury). Consistently a threat to go all the way, now Utami is unencumbered by outside pressure and is no doubt hungry to change what is a growing time period without an accolade.
Match to watch: Vs Maika, August 26. Whenever these two find themselves opposite one another, they go out of their way to demonstrate why they should be considered the premier power wrestlers in STARDOM. They had an absolute classic in the tournament last year, and they’ve only gotten better since then.

Maika
- Representing: Donna Del Mondo
- Best Performance: 2022 – 15 points (7-4-1)
- 2023 Singles Record: 2-1
She might not have the championship gold to show for it, but Maika has been quietly putting up a stellar 2023 inside the ring. Seeing her closest friend Himeka retire could have been a distraction, but instead Maika has positioned herself into one of the biggest threats in the tournament.
Arguably the strongest wrestler on the roster, Maika will be looking to assert herself early against a tough block. The good news is she seems to revel in the challenge. If Maika doesn’t advance, she’ll almost definitely have come within a victory of doing so, and could leave the tournament having put together an MVP level performance.
Match to watch: Vs Giulia, September 9. In her interview with Wrestle Inn, Maika herself had this match circled as the one she was most excited for, which alone makes this much watch. A battle between the two Donna Del Mondo representatives in the tournament inside what is sure to be a raucous Korakuen Hall.

Saori Anou
- Representing: Cosmic Angels
- Best Performance: N/A
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-1-1
By far the biggest wildcard in the tournament, Saori Anou has made a name for herself as one of the top stars of the joshi independents, including entering 2023 as the Ice Ribbon Infinity Champion. Since making regular appearances in STARDOM she’s quickly drawn a lot of attention, with many hoping to see her name entered into the tournament. A series of ‘dream match’ level matches awaits her now.
Saori is perhaps the most well rounded wrestler in her block. A technically sound veteran who can win the psychological battle while matching an opponent’s style, perhaps the only area she can’t compete in is the sheer brute strength of some in her block. Thankfully she can also take a lot of punishment – Anou will be a incredibly tough out as she looks to prove herself on the biggest stage.
Match to watch: Vs Giulia, July 23rd. Once more Giulia’s Ice Ribbon past looms over her shoulders. A lot has changed since they faced off in Giulia’s 16th ever match, both are arguably at the top of their games in 2023, and with the added pressure of starting the tournament off strong expect no punches to be pulled. Anou will have the added incentive in getting her win back after Giulia rolled her up to rip the Artist of Stardom titles away from her in May.

Momo Watanabe
- Representing: Oedo Tai
- Best Performance: 2021 – 5 Star Finalist (6-3)
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-2
It’s easy to forget how young Momo Watanabe is because it feels like it’s been so long since she was kicking heads off as the Wonder of Stardom Champion throughout 2018. At just 23 years old, the Black Peach still has a career’s worth of time ahead of her and a career’s worth of experience under her belt.
Last year’s tournament was a little disappointing by her standards, finding herself a couple of wins off the winning pace. There are few who can match her in the ring however, possessing some of the deadliest kicks in STARDOM and a downright killer attitude to boot. By all rights she should be right in the mix to advance to the final, but if not she will no doubt ruin someone else’s campaign.
Match to watch: Vs Utami Hayashishita, September 3rd. The Queen’s Quest/Oedo Tai storyline might have reached it’s zenith inside a steel cage, but there’s still a bubbling resentment held by the former leader of the Queens. Whenever these two meet the intensity rises, whether they’re getting along at the time or not.

MIRAI
- Representing: God’s Eye
- Best Performance: 2022 – 15 points (7-4-1)
- 2023 Singles Record: 7-1
There is no doubting MIRAI’s tournament pedigree, having won back to back Cinderella Tournaments and sitting just one point off the Finals pace in last year’s 5 Star GP. However it wasn’t until this month that she finally started to quiet the doubters. Winning the Wonder of Stardom Championship (her first ever singles title) takes the monkey off her back.
The White Belt may become a burden for the duration of the tournament however. Everyone in Blue Block will see a win over MIRAI as a golden ticket for a future title match. That being said, her hard hitting style and technical acumen has served her well. It’s just a matter of if she can handle being chased.
Match to watch: Vs AZM, August 5. MIRAI’s ability to burst into action is an underrated part of her wrestling style, featuring an explosive intensity that gives her an upper hand in most matchups. Against AZM however, she’ll be playing catchup to the fastest wrestler on the roster, in what should be an interesting inversion to the norm.

AZM
- Representing: Queen’s Quest
- Best Performance: 14 points – 2022 (7-5)
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-0-1
While she is no longer the High Speed Champion, AZM can take solace in knowing that she put her name in the record books, setting the new high mark of 12 defenses with the belt before falling to Saki Kashima in a triple threat match.
There is a distinct lack of ‘spoiler’ wrestlers in the tournament this year, but AZM is one to watch. Her blistering pace and ability to catch opponents off guard with the AZM-Sushi pinfall makes her one of the most dangerous matchups in the entire tournament. The young veteran might not win it all, but she’ll leave a trail of heartbreak behind her as opponents lament what could have been.
Match to watch: Vs Momo Watanabe, September 30. Nobody took Momo’s defection harder than AZM. She was the first to try and gain revenge, only to get knocked out cold. It’s been well over a year since the two have faced off one on one, so expect fireworks between the former MOMOAZ team.

Mina Shirakawa
- Representing: Club Venus (Leader)
- Best Performance: 10 points – 2022 (5-7)
- 2023 Singles Record: 3-1-1
For a brief moment Mina was on top of the world. In April She defeated Saya Kamitani to bring an end to the record breaking Wonder of Stardom Championship. In front of the largest crowd STARDOM have ever drew, she was one of the top champions. Only to lose the title a month later to Tam Nakano. Nevertheless the leader of STARDOM’s newest faction has rebounded well, and enters the tournament as one half of the Goddess of Stardom Tag Champions.
Mina hasn’t been a major threat in this tournament yet in terms of wins and losses. However it was during the Grand Prix that she first began to prove herself as being a main event calibre wrestler. Now there’s no question just how good Mina is, and even in a stacked tournament the expectations are high for the Club Venus leader.
Match to watch: vs MIRAI, July 29. Mina’s journey back to the White Belt she lost begins early into the tournament – against the new champion. MIRAI will also serve as a good litmus test for just how strong Mina’s wrestling has become, as she’ll go against a savvy wrestler who isn’t afraid to trade big shots.

Mariah May
- Representing: Club Venus
- Best Performance: N/A
- 2023 Singles Record: 2-1-1
Mariah May might be STARDOM’s biggest success story of 2023. She joined the company with less than 50 matches under her belt, but it didn’t take long until the British import made herself feel like an essential part of the product. Now she’s a champion, and the only foreigner to qualify for this year’s tournament.
May has improved dramatically since her first match in Japan, but now all that growth will be put to the test. She’ll be an underdog in most of her matches, so points will be hard to come by. However 2023 has been all about May defying expectations – that could continue through the tournament.
Match to watch: Vs Mina Shirakawa, August 15. It’s not often the Tag Champions get to square off against each other, but that’s exactly what’s going to happen at Korakuen Hall. Will they be able to set their friendship aside in pursuit of eternal glory?

Hanan
- Representing: STARS
- Best Performance: 4 Points – 2022 (2-10)
- 2023 Singles Record: 0-1
‘The Future Ace’ moniker has been hanging off of Hanan’s shoulders for several years. Now that she’s graduated high school, it’s a title that she’ll have to truly start proving, especially in a company with as much burgeoning superstar talent as STARDOM.
Last year’s tournament was all about gaining experience, and seeing what was expected from someone with her potential. A year later and Hanan has taken several steps forward, but it’s going to be even harder to scrape together points in a tighter 2023 field. Quality of performance, not quantity of wins will be the measuring stick once more. However now she’s graduated, the expectations will be infinitely higher
Match to watch: Vs Utami Hayashishita, September 24. If there’s anything you can rely on, it’s Hanan or any of her sisters looking to judo throw anyone who fancies themselves in the art. One such person is Utami, who holds a black belt in martial art. Expect a lot of technical throws and a more measured start than typical matches.
***
The 5 Star Grand Prix is when the STARDOM year kicks into a new gear, with the Final in particular a regular contender for their best show of the year. For some wrestlers, this will be their chance to prove they belong. For others, they’ll set up the rest of their year through their performances. Come September 30, the landscape for the rest of the STARDOM year will become clear.
It’s the most exciting time of the calendar year for fans, so be sure not to miss any of the action. While the above guide highlighted some key matchups, below is a list of the full tournament schedule – to make keeping track of the two month tournament easier.
